SmartLink C 2.0 or HD3? Adding 24V trucks to your LAUNCH X431 tablet

The SmartLink C 2.0 and HD3 add heavy-duty 24V diagnostics to a LAUNCH X431 tablet, but neither works on its own. The SmartLink C 2.0 works with X431 V+, PRO3, PRO3S and PRO5 series tablets. The HD3 is the older module and does not work with the X431 PRO5. Check your tablet before you order.

Modules, not standalone tools

The SmartLink C 2.0 and HD3 add heavy-duty 24V diagnostics to a LAUNCH X431 tablet. On their own, they can’t diagnose anything. They need a compatible tablet to run them.

That makes compatibility the single most important thing to check. A workshop that buys a module for a tablet it doesn’t work with ends up with a product it can’t use.

The one rule to remember: if you have an X431 PRO5, the HD3 is not an option. The SmartLink C 2.0 is the module that works with PRO5 series tablets.

We stock the standard SmartLink C V2.0. There is also an HD Lite version made for different tablets. The two are not interchangeable, so check which one a seller is offering.

How to check which tablet you have

Look for the model name on the tablet’s label or on its original box. If you’re not sure, take a photo of the tablet and its label and send it to us on WhatsApp before you order. It takes a minute and saves you from buying the wrong module.

Module or complete kit?

It depends on what you already own:

  • You already have a compatible X431 tablet: a truck module is the most cost-effective way to add 24V coverage.
  • You don’t have a tablet, or yours isn’t compatible: a complete kit is simpler. Our truck and heavy-duty range includes kits that pair a tablet with a truck module, and our car and truck bundles cover mixed workshops.
  • You’re not sure: send us your tablet model and the trucks you work on, and we’ll tell you which route fits.

Budget for truck software updates

Truck and diesel software is a separate update subscription. After the free update period, renewals run at roughly US$499 a year for truck and diesel, compared with roughly US$350 a year for 12V car software.

Updates also depend on where the tool was bought. LAUNCH restricts software updates by sales territory, so a unit bought outside its intended territory may never receive them. Read why software updates depend on where you buy.

Before you order a truck module

  1. Confirm your tablet model. Check the label or send us a photo.
  2. Match it to the module. Use the table above. PRO5 owners need the SmartLink C 2.0.
  3. List the trucks you work on. Make, model and year let us check coverage for your fleet or customers.
  4. Ask us to check. Our technicians confirm compatibility before you pay.

Why workshops come to us for trucks

Truck and 24V diagnostics are a genuine strength of ours. We’re LAUNCH specialists with a showroom in Midrand where you can see the kits and modules in person, and our technicians answer the phone and WhatsApp before and after you buy.

Questions we get asked

Does the HD3 work with the X431 PRO5?

No. The HD3 is the older truck module and is not compatible with the X431 PRO5. PRO5 series owners should look at the SmartLink C 2.0.

Can I use the SmartLink C 2.0 on its own?

No. It adds heavy-duty 24V coverage to a compatible X431 tablet: X431 V+, PRO3, PRO3S or PRO5 series.

Which is newer, SmartLink C 2.0 or HD3?

The SmartLink C 2.0 is the newer module. The HD3 is the older one.

What if I do not have a compatible tablet?

Choose a complete kit that pairs a tablet with a truck module. Launch Dealer SA can confirm which kit fits the trucks you work on.
