The PROS Elite is the right starting tablet for most South African car workshops

LAUNCH sells several professional tablets that look similar on paper. The practical differences for a South African workshop are screen size, VCI type, truck readiness and how cleanly the tool handles modern protocols such as CAN FD and DoIP.

What each model is for

The X431 PROS Elite is the compact professional tablet. It does full-system diagnostics, bi-directional active tests and ECU coding on a wide range of passenger vehicles. It supports CAN FD and DoIP, which matter on recent European and some Asian cars. For pure car work it is the model Launch Dealer SA recommends most often.

The X431 PRO3 APEX is a 10.1-inch tablet with the same core diagnostic capability and 37+ service resets. The larger screen makes topology maps and live data easier to read during longer jobs.

The X431 V+ 5.0 PRO3 is the larger-screen PRO3-series tablet. It also supports coding and bi-directional control. Pair it with a SmartLink C 2.0 and it becomes a practical car-and-truck platform.

Handheld CRP versus tablet

If you currently use a CRP123X Plus or CRP129X Plus, you already read every module and clear codes. Moving to any of these tablets adds bi-directional tests and ECU coding. That is the upgrade that stops you sending coding jobs elsewhere.

Truck work

Only tablets that accept the SmartLink C 2.0 or HD3 can add 24V heavy-duty software. Check compatibility before you buy the module. The V+ 5.0 PRO3 is commonly sold with truck capability in mind.

The South African practicalities

Buy a unit sold for the South African territory so software updates continue. Budget for the annual renewal (roughly US$350 for 12V car software). Visit the Midrand Motor City showroom and run the same job on two tablets before you decide.
