Start with the job, not the model number
Most workshop owners we speak to know exactly what they need to do. Find a fault on a customer’s car. Code a replacement module. Program a key. Diagnose a truck. What they don’t know is which LAUNCH model number does it, and the names don’t help.
The easiest way to read the LAUNCH range is as a ladder. Each step does everything the step below it does, and adds capability. Find the lowest step that covers the jobs you do every week, and you have your tool.
The LAUNCH range at a glance
| Step | Tool type | What it adds | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Handheld all-system | Diagnoses every module on a car | CRP123X Plus, CRP129X Plus |
| 2 | Entry professional tablet | Bi-directional tests, ECU coding, 31+ service resets | CRP919X |
| 3 | Professional tablet | Coding, programming and J2534 | PRO3 APEX, PROS Elite, V+ 5.0 PRO3 |
| 4 | Specialist | Key programming, immobiliser, ECU/TCU | IMMO Elite |
| 5 | Truck module | Adds 24V heavy-duty coverage to a compatible tablet | SmartLink C 2.0, HD3 |
Step 1: handheld all-system scanners
The CRP123X Plus and CRP129X Plus are our entry tier. They suit DIY owners, light workshop use and anyone who wants a fast, complete scan of a car.
Don’t mistake them for basic code readers. Four-system handhelds only look at the engine, transmission, ABS and SRS. The Plus versions read every module on the vehicle, which is why we stock them and not the four-system versions.
Step 2: when you need to make things happen, not just read
Reading fault codes tells you what the car thinks is wrong. Bi-directional tests let the tool command a component directly, so you can prove whether the part works before you replace it. That is the step up the CRP919X gives you.
It also adds ECU coding and 31+ service resets. For a workshop doing services, repairs and module replacements every day, this is usually where the range starts to pay for itself.
Step 3: professional tablets for coding and programming
The PRO3 APEX, PROS Elite and V+ 5.0 PRO3 add programming and J2534 to coding. J2534 is the pass-thru standard that lets the tablet work with manufacturer software to program modules.
Choose this step if you replace and program control units, or if you want one tool that covers the widest range of jobs in a busy workshop.
Step 4: keys and immobilisers
Key programming, immobiliser work and ECU/TCU jobs are specialist territory. The IMMO Elite is built for them. If keys are a regular part of your work, or a service you want to add, this is the tool to look at.
Step 5: adding trucks and 24V
Trucks need dedicated 24V coverage. You can buy a complete kit, or add a truck module to a compatible X431 tablet you already own.
The SmartLink C 2.0 and HD3 are modules, not standalone tools. Our SmartLink C 2.0 is the standard version and works with X431 V+, PRO3, PRO3S and PRO5 series tablets. The HD3 is the older module and is not compatible with the X431 PRO5. We explain the choice in full in SmartLink C 2.0 or HD3?.
Three questions to ask before you buy
- Which vehicles do you actually work on? Chinese brands passed 19% of South African passenger and light commercial sales in the first quarter of 2026. Coverage depends on the tool, the model and year, and the software version, so send us your make, model and year and we’ll check before you buy.
- Where is the tool from? LAUNCH restricts software updates by sales territory. A unit bought outside its intended territory may never receive updates. Read why software updates depend on where you buy.
- What will updates cost later? After the free update period, renewals run at roughly US$350 a year for 12V car software and US$499 a year for truck and diesel. Budget for them from day one.
Try before you choose
Model numbers make more sense with the tool in your hands. Visit our showroom at Midrand Motor City to compare tools side by side, or send us the vehicles you work on and the jobs you need to do on WhatsApp. A technician will point you to the right step, and we’ll still be here when you need help after the sale.

Questions we get asked
What is the entry-level LAUNCH tool that reads every module?
The handheld all-system scanners, the CRP123X Plus and CRP129X Plus. They read every module on the vehicle, not only engine, transmission, ABS and SRS.
Which LAUNCH tool do I need for ECU coding?
ECU coding starts at the CRP919X, which also adds bi-directional tests and 31+ service resets. For programming and J2534 as well, choose a professional tablet such as the PRO3 APEX, PROS Elite or V+ 5.0 PRO3.
Can a truck module work without a tablet?
No. The SmartLink C 2.0 and HD3 add 24V coverage to a compatible X431 tablet and cannot be used on their own.
Can I try a LAUNCH tool before I buy it?
Yes. Visit the Launch Dealer SA showroom at Midrand Motor City, Midrand, to see and test the tools side by side.
