Steering angle sensor reset after alignment: which LAUNCH tool for African workshops?

Replace a tie-rod end, rack or steering sensor and the car may need a steering angle reset. Here is which LAUNCH scanners list SAS reset or calibration, and what to check first.

Fit new tie-rod ends, swap a steering rack or do a wheel alignment, and the car may still drive off with a stability or steering warning on the dash. On many modern cars and bakkies the steering angle sensor (SAS) has to be reset or calibrated with a scan tool so the system knows where straight-ahead is. For workshops in South Africa and across Africa that do suspension, steering and alignment work, that reset belongs on your own tool, not on a trip to the dealer.

Launch Dealer SA is based in Midrand, South Africa, and supplies LAUNCH diagnostic tools to workshops across Africa.

When you need a steering angle reset

The steering angle sensor tells the stability, ABS and steering systems which way the wheels are pointing. If its zero point no longer matches the car, warning lights can stay on and those systems may not behave as they should. The CRP129X Plus product page describes Steering Angle Reset as setting the steering angle back to its zero point so the car runs accurately for left and right steering, and lists these cases:

  • Steering angle position sensor replacement.
  • Steering mechanical part replacement, such as the steering gearbox, steering column, tie-rod end or steering knuckle.

Many workshops also check the steering angle after a wheel alignment, because the steering wheel position changes when the toe is set. Whether a particular car needs a reset, and how the procedure runs, depends on the make, model and year. Check your vehicle list before you buy.

Entry handheld that lists SAS reset

The CRP129X Plus V3 lists eight reset functions on its product page: Oil Reset, Throttle Matching, SAS Reset, Brake Reset, DPF, Injector Coding, BMS Reset and TPMS Reset. It also scans all systems, including ABS and SAS, reads and clears codes and shows live data. For a tyre and alignment shop or a general workshop that mainly needs the steering reset alongside common service jobs on passenger cars and bakkies, this is the practical starting point.

The CRP123X Plus is a four-system entry tool (engine, transmission, ABS, airbag). It is not the pick when you need a full steering angle reset on cars that call for one.

Professional tablets for steering and chassis work

The X431 PROS Elite lists Steering Angle Calibration among its service functions, alongside Electronic Parking Brake Reset, ABS Bleeding, Suspension Calibration, Throttle Adaptation, TPMS Reset and more. It also covers full-system diagnostics, including the steering module, with bi-directional tests and ECU coding on supported vehicles.

The X431 V+ 5.0 PRO3 lists Steering Angle Sensor Calibration, EPB Reset, ABS Bleeding and Suspension Calibration among its workshop functions, on a larger workshop-grade platform for busy bays.

If your steering jobs often come with brake, ABS or suspension work on the same car, a tablet keeps all of those on one tool. For EPB and pad jobs, read our brake and EPB reset guide.

A steering angle reset is not ADAS calibration

On cars with lane-keeping cameras or radar, steering and alignment work can also affect driver-assistance systems. A steering angle reset alone does not calibrate a camera or radar. That needs the right procedure and, on many cars, targets. Read what to ask before you buy for ADAS work.

Questions we get asked

When does a car need a steering angle sensor reset?

The CRP129X Plus page lists steering angle position sensor replacement and steering mechanical part replacement, such as the steering gearbox, column, tie-rod end or knuckle. Many workshops also check it after a wheel alignment. Whether a car needs it depends on the make, model and year.

Which entry LAUNCH tool lists SAS reset?

The CRP129X Plus V3 lists SAS Reset among its eight reset functions. The CRP123X Plus is a four-system tool and is not the pick for steering angle reset.

Do the X431 tablets list steering angle calibration?

Yes. The X431 PROS Elite page lists Steering Angle Calibration and the X431 V+ 5.0 PRO3 page lists Steering Angle Sensor Calibration, both alongside EPB reset, ABS bleeding and suspension calibration.

Is a steering angle reset the same as ADAS calibration?

No. A steering angle reset does not calibrate lane-keeping cameras or radar. ADAS work needs its own procedure and, on many cars, targets.

Can I see a steering angle reset demo if I'm not near Midrand?

Yes. Book a WhatsApp video demo from our booking page, or visit our showroom at Shop AG008, Midrand Motor City.
