Electronic parking brake and brake pad reset: which LAUNCH tool for African workshops?

Change pads on a car with an electronic parking brake and the warning light often needs a tool. Here is which LAUNCH scanners list brake or EPB reset, and what to check first.

Change the pads on a car with an electronic parking brake and you often cannot finish the job with a spanner alone. An EPB or brake reset puts the calipers into service mode, turns the warning light off after the work, and rematches the brake module. For workshops in South Africa and across Africa that do brake jobs every week, that reset belongs on the scan tool, not on a dealer visit.

Launch Dealer SA is based in Midrand, South Africa, and supplies LAUNCH diagnostic tools to workshops across Africa.

When you need a brake or EPB reset

A basic OBD2 code reader that only clears codes is not the same as a brake service function. Product pages that list Brake Reset or Electronic Parking Brake Reset describe using the tool when pads, sensors or related parts are changed. Typical cases include:

  • Brake pad replacement. Many electronic parking brakes need the calipers opened and closed through the tool before and after the pads are fitted.
  • Brake warning still on. After pad or sensor work, the light or message stays until the module is reset.
  • Sensor or servo work. The CRP129X Plus page lists pad and brake sensor replacement, a brake MIL that stays on, releasing a shorted brake sensor, and servo motor replacement among the cases for Brake Reset.

Availability always depends on the make, model and year. Check your vehicle list before you buy.

Entry handheld that lists Brake Reset

The CRP129X Plus V3 page lists eight service functions, and one of them is Brake Reset. It describes resetting brake pads and turning off the warning light after a pad change, including work after pad or brake sensor replacement, a brake MIL that stays on, releasing a brake sensor from a short circuit, and servo motor replacement.

That same page also lists oil reset, throttle matching, steering angle reset, BMS reset, DPF regeneration, injector coding and TPMS reset, plus all-system diagnostics. For a workshop that mainly needs common service work on passenger cars and bakkies, this is the practical starting point for everyday brake-pad jobs that need a tool.

The CRP123X Plus is a four-system entry tool (engine, transmission, ABS, airbag). Its summary does not list Brake Reset or EPB, so it is not the tool for electronic parking brake service work.

Professional tablets that list EPB and brake service

The X431 PROS Elite page lists Electronic Parking Brake Reset among 32+ service and maintenance functions, alongside oil/service reset, battery registration / BMS, steering angle calibration, ABS bleeding, injector coding, DPF regeneration, throttle adaptation and more. It also lists full-system diagnostics (including the electronic parking brake module itself), bi-directional tests, ECU coding on supported vehicles, and modern protocol support (CAN FD, DoIP, FCA AutoAuth).

If your workshop already needs coding, active tests and a wider service menu — including ABS bleeding on vehicles that need the pump driven during a fluid change — the PROS Elite covers EPB reset in that same toolkit. For more service-reset depth and older non-OBD2 adapters, see the X431 PRO3 APEX (37+ service resets on its product page). The wireless CRP919X/E BT sits between handheld and full professional tablet for workshops that want bi-directional work and a larger service set without jumping straight to the top tablet.

Questions we get asked

What is an EPB or brake pad reset?

On many modern cars the electronic parking brake must be put into service mode before pad work, then reset afterwards so the warning light clears and the module rematches. The CRP129X Plus page describes Brake Reset after pad or sensor changes; the PROS Elite page lists Electronic Parking Brake Reset among 32+ service functions.

Which entry LAUNCH tool lists Brake Reset?

The CRP129X Plus V3 page lists Brake Reset among its eight service functions. The CRP123X Plus is a four-system tool and does not list Brake Reset or EPB.

Do professional X431 tablets list EPB reset?

Yes. The X431 PROS Elite page lists Electronic Parking Brake Reset among 32+ service functions, plus ABS bleeding. The PRO3 APEX page lists 37+ service resets for workshops that need a wider menu.

Does every car need a tool for brake pad changes?

No. It depends on whether the vehicle has an electronic parking brake and on the make, model and year. Check vehicle coverage on the product page or with us before you buy.

Can I see an EPB reset demo if I'm not near Midrand?

Yes. Book a WhatsApp video demo from our booking page, or visit our showroom at Shop AG008, Midrand Motor City.
