Diagnosing older cars and bakkies: which LAUNCH tool for South African workshops?

Older cars don't always plug into a scanner like new ones. Here is how to check the plug and year, and which LAUNCH tool covers older vehicles.

Older cars and bakkies are still a big part of the work in South African workshops, and they don't always plug into a scanner the way a 2020 car does. For 12V cars from 1996 onwards with a standard 16-pin socket, the CRP129X Plus V3 is the simple start. For vehicles with a different plug, the PRO3 APEX comes with a non-16-pin adapter set, and the PROS Elite is a workshop tablet built for both older and newer vehicles.

Why older vehicles are different

Most modern cars have a 16-pin OBD2 diagnostic socket under the dash, and almost any scanner can talk to it. Older vehicles are less predictable. Some have the 16-pin socket but use older communication protocols. Others, especially older Asian and European models, use a maker-specific diagnostic plug in the engine bay or under the dash, so a standard OBD2 cable won't even connect.

That matters on the roads here, where plenty of customers still drive older sedans, hatchbacks and bakkies that have been well looked after for years. A workshop that can only scan new cars sends that work elsewhere.

Step 1: check the plug and the year

Before you choose a tool, look at what you actually see in your bays:

  • Is there a 16-pin socket? If yes, an OBD2 tool can usually connect. If not, you need the right adapter for that make.
  • What year is the vehicle? Coverage on every tool is listed by make, model and year, so it's the first thing to check.
  • Petrol or diesel, car or truck? 12V cars and light commercials are one job. 24V trucks need a heavy-duty setup.

The CRP129X Plus V3 for 16-pin cars from 1996

The CRP129X Plus V3 page lists coverage of 10,000+ vehicle models from 85+ brands, from 1996 to 2024, with weekly data updates. It lists the OBD2, EOBD, JOBD and CAN protocols and says it serves 12V passenger cars, pickups, light-duty trucks, SUVs and minivans.

On those vehicles it reads every system, not just the engine, and the page lists eight resets, including oil, brake, throttle matching, steering angle and battery (BMS). For a workshop or owner whose older vehicles still have a 16-pin socket, it's an affordable way to cover them. See our CRP123X Plus vs CRP129X Plus comparison if you're choosing between the two handhelds.

The PRO3 APEX for vehicles with a different plug

The PRO3 APEX is listed on our store with a non-16-pin adapter set, which is the practical difference for older vehicles that don't have a standard OBD2 socket. Its page lists full-system diagnostics, live data with graphing, service resets, bi-directional active tests and ECU coding (vehicle dependent). It also lists coverage of Asian, European, American and South African vehicle models, over a wireless Bluetooth VCI.

If you regularly see older vehicles with maker-specific plugs, this is the tool on our range built with that in mind.

The PROS Elite for mixed old-and-new workshops

Most general workshops don't only see old cars. They see a 2008 bakkie in one bay and a 2023 SUV in the next. The PROS Elite page lists CAN FD, DoIP and FCA AutoAuth support for newer vehicles and describes it as suitable for workshops working on both older and many newer vehicles. It adds active tests, ECU coding and 32+ service functions. See our handheld vs tablet guide for how the formats compare.

Older diesels and trucks

If the older vehicles you see are 24V trucks, a car tool isn't the answer. Look at a heavy-duty setup such as the X431 V+ HD3 truck diagnostic tool, and read our truck module guide first.

Send us your vehicle list

WhatsApp a technician on 072 807 1095 with the makes, models and years you work on, and a photo of the diagnostic plug if you're unsure. You can also try the tools at our Midrand showroom. Then get the CRP129X Plus V3, the PRO3 APEX or the PROS Elite.

Questions we get asked

Can a normal OBD2 scanner read an older car?

Only if the car has a 16-pin OBD2 socket and a supported protocol. Older vehicles with a maker-specific plug need an adapter.

Which years does the CRP129X Plus V3 cover?

Its product page lists 10,000+ models from 85+ brands, from 1996 to 2024, on 12V cars, pickups, light-duty trucks, SUVs and minivans.

Which LAUNCH tool comes with non-16-pin adapters?

The PRO3 APEX on our store is listed with a non-16-pin adapter set for vehicles that don't have a standard OBD2 socket.

What if my workshop sees both old and new cars?

The PROS Elite page describes it as suitable for older vehicles and many newer ones, with CAN FD, DoIP and FCA AutoAuth support.

How do I know a tool covers my vehicle?

Send the make, model, year and a photo of the diagnostic plug to a technician on WhatsApp, 072 807 1095, before you buy.
